Analysis Exercise
One Scene, Three Reversals: Take one scene and write three versions. In version one, the protagonist gets what they want too easily. In version two, they fail once and then succeed at a cost. In version three, every attempt fails and they must make a morally costly choice. Practice this twice a month.
The Antagonist Writes the Scene: Write any scene from the antagonist's perspective (Tucker, Roxie, the doorman, a cop, the crowd) with their own set of wants, stakes, and justifications. Then rewrite the original scene using that knowledge to give the antagonist active counter-moves.
Silent Draft: Rewrite a current dialogue-heavy scene with zero dialogue, expressing the conflict, emotional state, and turning point purely through action, objects, and physical detail. Then compare the two versions.
